Breaking the Silence: How The Fibroid Pandemic is Helping Women Save Their Wombs

Fibroids are mysterious growth that affects women as early as age 15 and affect Black women 3x more than other ethnicities. With an unknown cause, many women may not know where to turn which is why advocate LaToya Dwight uses her intersectionality of insurance expertise and a personal fibroid journey to help others save their uterus through her platform The Fibroid Pandemic. With their second annual Run F.A.R 5K Walk/Run and panel discussion on July 14-15, 2023, is helping women take ownership of their bodies.

 Fighting A Silent Epidemic

The Fibroid Pandemic Founder LaToya Dwight’s Fibroid journey was an unexpected one after a routine check-up with her OB/GYN. She vividly recalls going in for her contraception maintenance, when her doctor couldn’t locate her IUD. After being referred to an ultrasound specialist, not only did they find her IUD, but they found fibroids. She later found herself taken aback after her doctor failed to educate her on her diagnosis and quickly recommended a hysterectomy.

After a separate visit to get her IUD replaced, she started to hemorrhage during the procedure; and again, without proper care from her physician, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She would try different diets, yoga, breathing exercises, and other holistic practices and research other treatments before she found a solution that would work best for her– Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), also referred to as uterine artery embolization. LaToya explains it’s a procedure consisting of cutting the blood supply to the artery that feeds the fibroid.

Her Calling

The testimony she shared on her Facebook would go on to spark a movement after she received an influx of engagement from others who have or know someone who had a battle with fibroids. LaToya shares she felt a sense of discernment and knew it was something bigger than herself. She went on to brainstorm with her husband and later consulted with a friend who helped her realize her mission rather quickly. LaToya states, “I knew that I was supposed to help humans with a uterus by providing tools and resources for them to make their own decision on what they feel is in their best interest …I knew no matter which way I went it would be led by God.”’

The Fibroid Pandemic: A Stride Towards Awareness

Founded in 2020, The Fibroid Pandemic is a resource community dedicated to helping Black Women living with uterine fibroids. The holistic platform provides women with natural products and foods as well as connects them with healthcare providers to help assist on their fibroid healing journey. LaToya is big on interactive education, and she provides several masterclasses and events throughout the year– including their highly praised annual Run F.A.R. 5K Run/Walk.

July: Fibroid Awareness Month

The debut event became the first fibroid 5K walk/run in North America, garnering twenty-five sponsorships from major companies including Radio One, The Honey Pot Co., and New York Life. The success of the event is continuing this July.

The two-day event features The Fibroid Brunch Panel Discussion featuring ten health and wellness experts providing sound solutions and remedies for healing oneself on July 14th and the Run F.A.R. 5K Run/Walk happening on July 15th. Participants can join in person or virtually with a self-guided 5K. Others can give registration to others or be a ghost or phantom participant who registers without participating. No matter how you decide to participate, everyone will receive a t-shirt and participation medal.

A portion of the proceeds will go to Pad The Pandemic, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to help eliminate period poverty and unnecessary hysterectomies.

LaToya’s Mark

She wants people to remember her passion and how she made them feel when they could relate to her and her fibroid journey. “I want people to remember that I am a relentless fibroid advocate, and I’ll do it to the day I die as long as God guides my steps.”

You Are Never Too Young to Do Anything: Nichelle Joi Shares her Experiences As a 16-Year-Old Author & Filmmaker

At 16 years old, most kids aren’t focused on the importance of their future or their passions, but Chicago native Nichelle Joi has been executing her dreams since a very young age. A four-time published author, dancer, violinist, actress, and aspiring filmmaker, Nichelle is a force to be reckoned with.

“You Are Never Too Young to Do Anything.”

Nichelle Joi is the epitome of you are never too young to do anything. By the fourth grade, she had found her love for writing through a class assignment, that would eventually turn into her first book, The Joys of Writing: Short Stories for Kids, following The Great Adventures: The Mystery of the Missing Artifacts, which both were featured in the African American Literary Festival in Chicago.

As a young writer, Nichelle noticed there weren’t many representations of people that looked like her, and she was determined to write books and for children to recognize themselves in her craft. Her third book, Beautiful Brown Child, was visually narrated by 45 beautiful brown children, while her last book My Camera and Me, journals her discovery of her passion for filmmaking.

“Find A Creative Space and Go for It”

While Nichelle has an extensive writing history and published books to showcase her craft, her talents don’t stop there. Nichelle is a professional violinist, dancer, and actress who loves filmmaking. Her goals for herself are nothing short of amazing, with plans to attend the University of Southern California on a full scholarship; she also dreams of working on a big movie project. She believes her gift of writing is what inspires her visions and God-given gift for filmmaking.

With her biggest inspiration in writing being her mother Marilyn, Nichelle shares that though her mother doesn’t share her creative works often, she’s thankful to see how beautifully she writes. She attributes her mother’s experience, motivation, work ethic, drive, and determination as essential components of her own career foundation. She also expressed high gratitude to her high-school film teacher for navigating her through the ebbs and flows of creating.

Although Nichelle has accomplished so much by the age of 16, she has experienced writer’s block, in which she shares how seeking others’ perspectives can assist in that process.

One of her biggest challenges is knowing how to switch from being a professional and just being a 16-year-old when hanging out with her friends, but she enjoys seeing the different perspectives of them all. Whether she chooses to write, dance, act, or become a filmmaker, Nichelle encourages all kids to push through all of the obstacles they will face, take in everything they read because it will help them develop in different ways, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone to see the greatness on the other side.

Greenish Brands Host Event Empowering, Educating, and Celebrating Black Cannabis Professionals

“A DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE INDUSTRY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS AND GROWTH”

Diversity and inclusion have made their way to the forefront of Black communities and businesses and have no plans to stop until equality is met for all. Amid diversifying industries created with minority biases, Greenish Vibes and Greenish Events partnered with the San Diego County of Black Chamber of Commerce to host a purposeful event celebrating, empowering, and educating Black professionals and entrepreneurs in the cannabis industry.

To understand how the war on drugs in America affected Black and minority communities, you will then understand how the knowledge of building generational wealth in a legal cannabis industry is nothing less than equitable for Black entrepreneurs and industry professionals. Greenish Brands is a luxury apothecary wellness brand founded and created by Danicka Brown-Frazier. Within Greenish Brands are Greenish Vibes and Greenish events, which intentionally collaborate with Black and indigenous people of color and women-owned brands to host educational lifestyle experiences to build community.

“CELEBRATE, EMPOWER & EDUCATE”

Greenish Events recently hosted a Black Founders in Cannabis Panel in San Diego on March 3, 2023. This event produced knowledge from many successful cannabis professionals, including Freeway Ricky Ross, Virgil Grant, and Cheryl Morrow, who all provided insight into building their careers in a rapidly growing industry. The cannabis industry lacks inclusion, impacting Black Americans; reports show that 4.3% of cannabis is owned or co-owned by Black business owners. The panelist also gave insight into challenges created to keep the Black entrepreneur out of this industry and solutions to overcome and succeed.

“We hope that this event’s momentum and impact will inspire industry leaders, policymakers, and consumers alike to continue creating opportunities for marginalized communities. “- Danicka Brown-Frazier.

Black entrepreneurs must be represented correctly and take advantage of the cannabis industry, as the Black culture itself is filled with movers and shakers in any industry. As culture leaders, Greenish Brands are creating a positive narrative for Black entrepreneurs not just to own a business but learn how to become heirs and heiresses of companies to leave to their families.

The importance for Black communities, professionals, and entrepreneurs is to work on being creative in not just the cannabis industry. Still, in any industry, find the gray areas and use what you have to succeed. It’s essential to break the stigma of a drive in the Black community that can build generational wealth. Greenish Brands have established a rapport with other Black businesses to carry their products and spread knowledge and support to create a space for all Black entrepreneurs and cannabis professionals.

The next Greenish Event’s experience is scheduled for April 16, 2023, in San Diego, CA, featuring Freeway Ricky Ross.
