Breaking the Silence: How The Fibroid Pandemic is Helping Women Save Their Wombs

Fibroids are mysterious growth that affects women as early as age 15 and affect Black women 3x more than other ethnicities. With an unknown cause, many women may not know where to turn which is why advocate LaToya Dwight uses her intersectionality of insurance expertise and a personal fibroid journey to help others save their uterus through her platform The Fibroid Pandemic. With their second annual Run F.A.R 5K Walk/Run and panel discussion on July 14-15, 2023, is helping women take ownership of their bodies.

 Fighting A Silent Epidemic

The Fibroid Pandemic Founder LaToya Dwight’s Fibroid journey was an unexpected one after a routine check-up with her OB/GYN. She vividly recalls going in for her contraception maintenance, when her doctor couldn’t locate her IUD. After being referred to an ultrasound specialist, not only did they find her IUD, but they found fibroids. She later found herself taken aback after her doctor failed to educate her on her diagnosis and quickly recommended a hysterectomy.

After a separate visit to get her IUD replaced, she started to hemorrhage during the procedure; and again, without proper care from her physician, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She would try different diets, yoga, breathing exercises, and other holistic practices and research other treatments before she found a solution that would work best for her– Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), also referred to as uterine artery embolization. LaToya explains it’s a procedure consisting of cutting the blood supply to the artery that feeds the fibroid.

Her Calling

The testimony she shared on her Facebook would go on to spark a movement after she received an influx of engagement from others who have or know someone who had a battle with fibroids. LaToya shares she felt a sense of discernment and knew it was something bigger than herself. She went on to brainstorm with her husband and later consulted with a friend who helped her realize her mission rather quickly. LaToya states, “I knew that I was supposed to help humans with a uterus by providing tools and resources for them to make their own decision on what they feel is in their best interest …I knew no matter which way I went it would be led by God.”’

The Fibroid Pandemic: A Stride Towards Awareness

Founded in 2020, The Fibroid Pandemic is a resource community dedicated to helping Black Women living with uterine fibroids. The holistic platform provides women with natural products and foods as well as connects them with healthcare providers to help assist on their fibroid healing journey. LaToya is big on interactive education, and she provides several masterclasses and events throughout the year– including their highly praised annual Run F.A.R. 5K Run/Walk.

July: Fibroid Awareness Month

The debut event became the first fibroid 5K walk/run in North America, garnering twenty-five sponsorships from major companies including Radio One, The Honey Pot Co., and New York Life. The success of the event is continuing this July.

The two-day event features The Fibroid Brunch Panel Discussion featuring ten health and wellness experts providing sound solutions and remedies for healing oneself on July 14th and the Run F.A.R. 5K Run/Walk happening on July 15th. Participants can join in person or virtually with a self-guided 5K. Others can give registration to others or be a ghost or phantom participant who registers without participating. No matter how you decide to participate, everyone will receive a t-shirt and participation medal.

A portion of the proceeds will go to Pad The Pandemic, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to help eliminate period poverty and unnecessary hysterectomies.

LaToya’s Mark

She wants people to remember her passion and how she made them feel when they could relate to her and her fibroid journey. “I want people to remember that I am a relentless fibroid advocate, and I’ll do it to the day I die as long as God guides my steps.”

You Are Never Too Young to Do Anything: Nichelle Joi Shares her Experiences As a 16-Year-Old Author & Filmmaker

At 16 years old, most kids aren’t focused on the importance of their future or their passions, but Chicago native Nichelle Joi has been executing her dreams since a very young age. A four-time published author, dancer, violinist, actress, and aspiring filmmaker, Nichelle is a force to be reckoned with.

“You Are Never Too Young to Do Anything.”

Nichelle Joi is the epitome of you are never too young to do anything. By the fourth grade, she had found her love for writing through a class assignment, that would eventually turn into her first book, The Joys of Writing: Short Stories for Kids, following The Great Adventures: The Mystery of the Missing Artifacts, which both were featured in the African American Literary Festival in Chicago.

As a young writer, Nichelle noticed there weren’t many representations of people that looked like her, and she was determined to write books and for children to recognize themselves in her craft. Her third book, Beautiful Brown Child, was visually narrated by 45 beautiful brown children, while her last book My Camera and Me, journals her discovery of her passion for filmmaking.

“Find A Creative Space and Go for It”

While Nichelle has an extensive writing history and published books to showcase her craft, her talents don’t stop there. Nichelle is a professional violinist, dancer, and actress who loves filmmaking. Her goals for herself are nothing short of amazing, with plans to attend the University of Southern California on a full scholarship; she also dreams of working on a big movie project. She believes her gift of writing is what inspires her visions and God-given gift for filmmaking.

With her biggest inspiration in writing being her mother Marilyn, Nichelle shares that though her mother doesn’t share her creative works often, she’s thankful to see how beautifully she writes. She attributes her mother’s experience, motivation, work ethic, drive, and determination as essential components of her own career foundation. She also expressed high gratitude to her high-school film teacher for navigating her through the ebbs and flows of creating.

Although Nichelle has accomplished so much by the age of 16, she has experienced writer’s block, in which she shares how seeking others’ perspectives can assist in that process.

One of her biggest challenges is knowing how to switch from being a professional and just being a 16-year-old when hanging out with her friends, but she enjoys seeing the different perspectives of them all. Whether she chooses to write, dance, act, or become a filmmaker, Nichelle encourages all kids to push through all of the obstacles they will face, take in everything they read because it will help them develop in different ways, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone to see the greatness on the other side.

135 Years in the Making: The Historic Leadership of Sheltering Arms President and CEO Blythe Keeler Robinson

Blythe Keeler Robinson has led the educational nonprofit Sheltering Arms for the last decade and helped implement elevation and innovation into the organization. Blythe is not new to the landscape, as she has prior experience in early childhood education and nonprofit management.

She currently serves as president and CEO of Sheltering Arms Early Education & Family Centers in Metro Atlanta. After the former CEO retired, a search firm was looking to hire a new CEO– and the rest is history.

Providing quality early childhood education since 1888

Sheltering Arms is one of the largest early childhood education facilities in the State of Georgia. The organization was founded by a group of concerned women who began the first center as a safe space for children whose parents worked in the mills. 135 years later, the organization continues to provide safe space along with high quality affordable, and accessible world-class education. The organization serves children from 6 weeks to 5 years ago. They serve up to 3500 children and their families.

Blythe states, “We continue to approach the child and family two-generation approach, viewing their work through an equity lens.” Sheltering Arms is focused on removing barriers, fighting systemic racism, and offering families hope, inspiration, and help to fulfill their full potential.

“The sooner we start teaching a child the better”

Quality early childhood education is vital because so much happens in the first few years of life and the brain is rapidly developing. We must nurture, talk, play, and expose children to many different experiences.” Blythe shares. It sets the foundation for later academic and social-emotional successes including other skills essential to success over their lives.” Many studies show these programs increase school readiness and reduce at-risk social behavior while creating a stable and educated workforce.

HERSTORY:

Blythe’s leadership will leave a lasting imprint on the Sheltering Arms community. When she stepped into her role as the first Black woman President and CEO, she walked into something bigger than herself.

She reflects on her first week when she met one of their grandmothers in the classroom, who commented on her excitement about her new leadership and the impact she would have on children, their families, and the staff.

In that moment I understood my responsibility and how my life was taking shape to be a leader at Sheltering Arms and in the community at large. Being a Black woman CEO means a lot to other individuals- younger women and younger girls who are looking up to me and the work that I am doing. It means a lot to hold this position.”

As a leader, her mission is centered around everything service and giving back, which has always been the foundation of her work.

2023 The Year of Many Celebrations

As Sheltering Arms enters 135 years of service to Atlanta, Blythe also celebrates ten years of leadership.

“It is an honor for me to lead an organization that’s about excellence, that’s about quality, that’s about community. That’s what this time means to me,” she states.

She has gotten to know supporters, and individuals in different partnership capacities and work with a dedicated and passionate team. One of her favorite moments includes the opening of the Sheltering Arms Center at the Barack Obama School. The new center used a community approach in creating the design.

As the organization continues to celebrate, they are preparing for its Ultimate Shopping Experience at its downtown office on April 29, 2023. New to gently used clothing and furniture will be available for purchase. They are hosting their Annual Street Party on September 28 including food, fun, music, and dancing. The proceeds from both events will help support the mission and programs at Sheltering Arms.

Doretha White Dreams Big During Her Transition from Educator to Entrepreneur

Dreaming Big

Multifaceted talent, educator, and successful entrepreneur Doretha White is using her 33 years as an educator to provide a lifehack guide, curriculum, and college experience to impact communities and help young adults navigate all their adult responsibilities with ease and confidence. Doretha is a personal and business coach, writer, publisher, speaker, and a gem to those who cross her path.

Advancing the Knowledge of the Youth

In 1991 Doretha White received her degree and embarked on what would become a 30-year journey of professional education. As a native of Virginia with a solid Christian family structure, Doretha originally had big dreams to become a journalist, writer, speaker, and maybe the next Oprah Winfrey, but those dreams didn’t instantly become her reality as she may have hoped. With a mother who displayed love and passion for education, Doretha shared the same love and passion for helping others, children, and families. Within her career, she knew she wanted to make an impact.

Doretha noticed some things didn’t serve the community well, including African American families and communities. She grew her interest in advancing the knowledge of the youth by filling in the gaps she witnessed throughout her career. Understanding that all children may not have a strong foundation or mentor, she created a lifehack guidebook, All the Stuff Your Parents Meant to Teach You But Never Got Around To It: The Ultimate Adulting Lifehack Guidebook.

The Ultimate Lifehack

While Doretha has an extensive background in education, she is also a mother, wife, and aunt. Observing her children and wanting to impact the youth is what sparked the idea to create the ultimate life hack guidebook. As a parent, Doretha knew that if she was concerned, wondering if she had taught her children everything, other parents must also be.

In her guidebook designed for ages 16-25+, Doretha provides 101 interactive journal-style lessons with individual sections on self-care, adult & professional skills, relationships, and personal safety. She believes that if you start with love, kids will respond better. You have to be the change you want to see. Doretha White isn’t just being the change; she is a part of the initiative that is creating room for change in all communities. As a big dreamer and change maker, Doretha, alongside her husband, made Dream Big Youth Travel in 2003, giving children the ultimate college tour experience. With 20 years of completing tours to HBCUs, PWI, trade schools, art schools, and more, Doretha has helped more than 30,000 children and families know what it means to dream big.

Don’t Get Off Your Path; Trust the Maker

Doretha has had an extraordinary life and continues to show her love and passion for education in her entrepreneurial journey. Although she didn’t pursue a career in journalism, she has reached a full circle moment by doing precisely what her heart desired all along. She is a published writer, speaker, and creator and makes an impact on the lives of many. One thing Doretha wishes she knew as a young adult was to follow her own heart and not let the fear of others be projected onto her. “The fear of others can knock you off your path, but you have to trust that we all have a creator who gave us a purpose, and if you are determined, you will walk out your path and find your purpose.” Even if you get knocked off your path, Doretha White proves that even some of the longest journeys will lead you right back to where you are supposed to be.

Domestic Violence advocate Lisa Jenkins: The voice for the voiceless

“You are enough”

Mother, wife, and grandmother, Lisa Jenkins is using her life experiences to empower victims of domestic, sexual, and child abuse through her organization, Kingdom Builder Family Life Center (KBFLC) based in Colorado Springs. Lisa has worked with survivors and their families for the last 25 years and started KBFLC 15 years into her career. As we begin to reflect on Lisa’s impactful career, we begin where it all started– in her own household.

“God if you allow me to live, I’ll spend the rest of my life helping those in similar situations.”

In 1994, twenty-four year old Lisa had been in an abusive marriage for 5 years and nearly escaped death. Once she left, she found herself trying to navigate her new life with her 3 children. Lisa’s sole focus was creating a better environment for her and her children. She found herself trying to overcome stereotypical barriers and protecting her children who were emotionally affected by the ordeal. It also affected her trust in her current marriage. She credits therapy and education for helping her understand what she was going through and helping her marriage thrive.

Also as a Black Woman in Colorado, there weren’t many in that position, she found herself constantly proving herself and showing her worth while intentionally making sure those who came to her door were supported– by  bringing on a team to reflect those being served and never giving up. While Lisa face many obstacles over the course of 30 years, she  kept her faith in God and soon knew he would guide her down the right path

Kingdom Builders 10 years in the making

At the rise of Kingdom Builders, Lisa was a seasoned advocate with the government full time, where there was a scarcity of resources. She knew in order to effect real change, would be to remove herself from her full time commitment and secure resources to help Kingdom Builders thrive– which she did! In 2018 Lisa was awarded a grant and was able to resign, putting full force behind KBFLC as CEO. This momentum allowed Lisa and KBFLC to connect with other established agencies and get victim services fully funded– with local, state, and federal assistance. “Now I am able to provide the resources survivors need.” She states, “In order to eliminate a person’s [domestic abuse]  situation, you have to have the financial aspect to support them. We can all say we want to help, but if we can’t provide housing, financial assistance, emergency services and other aspects that a survivor needs, then they’re less likely to leave.”

The Kingdom Builders impact

Lisa shares that Statistically 1:4 Women + 1:7 Men report abuse, while 1:5 Youth have been exposed to domestic violence and 1:12 high schoolers are involved with teen dating violence. For adolescents affected by an abusive environment, it’s likely that 90 percent of them will become harmed or harmful themselves. At Kingdom builders they help youth recognize that this behavior is not okay and educate them on the importance of healthy relationships.

In her personal and professional experience, Lisa says advocacy means a lot to the community. “When you’re in that moment, all your power and independence is probably taken away.” So to have someone that says I may not exactly understand what you’ve been through, but I want to help.

Bringing Awareness-

April marks Sexual Assault and Children Abuse Awareness months which is a focal point of KBFLC. The organization hosts weekly cake and conversations where participants can tour the facility on Wednesdays and learn how they can best support the organization. In light of their 10 year anniversary,  KBFLC is hosting their Race Against Violence 5k in August with their two-day Domestic Violence conference and 10 year anniversary Gala slated for October.

I am Lisa Jenkins Legacy

While Lisa continues to walk in her purpose she is now introducing all of her layers to the world through her “I am Lisa Jenkins” Brand through speaking engagements and interviews. I want to be able to help– I am a helper and a server. Lisa is using the tools God has given her to help other mothers, individuals, and families. She wants to use her personal experience as a voice for those in need. She is currently gearing up to release her debut podcast and also hopes to have satellite offices across the country reflecting the advocacy being done at Kingdom Builders.
