At the crossroads of Black History and Women’s History stands DeLois Babiker, an undeniable force shaping the narrative of success. A noteworthy figure in technology and environmental advancement, Babiker blazed uncharted trails on her journey to become tFounder and CIO of Intellectual Concepts, a technology firm championing communities worldwide.
As a relentless advocate for industry advancement, Babiker embodies strength, leadership, and unwavering faith. Her journey is a testament to breaking through technological glass ceilings, operating with a triple-threat strategy to empower others at every level. She is not merely a leader; she is a walking catalyst for change, ensuring that everyone in her orbit possesses the tools to ascend.
Originally drawn to the professional world of fashion, Babiker envisioned creating plus-size fashion for teenagers. However, recognizing the lack of purchasing power among Black women at the time, she pivoted to technology at the urging of her technologically inclined father. That new path seamlessly blended her passion for fashion and pursuit of excellence in data processing, computer programming, and information technology.
After several years in the corporate sector, Babiker’s entrepreneurial spirit truly shone during the tumultuous economic landscape of 2008-2009. Faced with uncertainties, she had to make a pivotal decision –“was I going to look for a job or build a job?” This choice marked the genesis of Intellectual Concepts, a leading environmental consulting firm.
A visionary leader, Babiker understood the significance of nurturing the next generation of change makers. In 2010, she founded Intellectual Concepts, with her daughter Essence Johnson by her side, joining as VP of Operations. In the 14 years since, Johnson has carved her own path within the company, and is seamlessly transitioning into the role of Babiker’s successor.
Remaining at the forefront of industry trends and displaying an insatiable eagerness to learn, Intellectual Concepts thrives domestically and internationally. The company’s footprint started with public health, the Department of Defense and federal contracting and would later expand to include mobility, environmental justice, and transit. Navigating both familiar and lesser known territories, DeLois strategically aligned with organizations that complemented IC’s mission and current work. For two years she took time to learn these industries, which not only helped her become an industry expert, but as a leader, preparing her team for the new landscapes to come.
In adherence to her rule of 3s, Babiker imparts invaluable advice of passion, awareness, and curiosity to aspiring Black and Brown women in leadership. Her proudest achievement echoes through her work advocating the return of employees and contractors, advancing from entry level employees to senior level executives, who directly support Intellectual Concepts and their projects.
As internal innovation and ingenuity continues to unfold, Intellectual Concepts will debut its groundbreaking Air Monitoring Solutions Initiative—a locally installed unit that processes and translates
critical environmental data on air quality. Focusing on underserved communities with a history of pollution, this tool equips advocates and residents with the necessary tools to initiate conversations with statesmen around environmentally provoked health crises .
In the ever-evolving landscape of progress, DeLois Babiker and Intellectual Concepts stand as beacons, lighting the way for a more fair and equal future.
